Danek has a little car.

It’s so little, in fact, Kingsley in his four-legged wolf form is bigger than it. No idea what kind of car it is, except that it looks like the ones that always end up smashing into a fruit cart in every action movie set in Europe. Needless to say, the big bad wolf doesn’t try to squeeze himself into this thing. It would be more accurate to say he’d be ‘wearing’ the car rather than riding in it.

Anyway, since it’s dark out, he does indeed get into his wolf form and follows us in the shadows. Allison’s up front in the passenger seat with the ‘spell compass’ she made while I’m in the back with my kids on either side. How did I go from trying to shield them from this weird stuff at all costs, driving them to school and hoping they didn’t even get a bruise to willingly bringing them with me into a fight against Old World vampires?

My life has seriously taken a strange turn.

Is it odd that I find it more difficult to cope with the truth that my kids are almost grown up now and are becoming forces in their own right than I can cope with all this supernatural stuff? It’s not fair to them to keep thinking of Tammy and Anthony like they’re kids who need to be protected, but I can’t help it. They’re my kids, and nothing matters to me more than making sure they’re safe.

Thanks, Mom, says Tammy in my head. It’s a little annoying to be thought of as a child, but since I can literally see into your head, it’s kinda hard to argue about it since I know you’re overprotective because of how much you love us.

With Danek driving, navigating the often narrow, winding streets of Prague isn’t a problem. He grew up here, so he knows all the shortcuts and alleys. The Momvan’s side mirrors would scrape the walls on both sides in some spots. No wonder the guy’s car is so tiny.

Allison watches the floating clay-like compass, for the most part keeping us going in a relatively straight line for about twenty minutes. Danek turns wherever he can as indicated. The third or fourth time he goes left, what I think is going to be another one of those tiny micro-streets turns out to be a driveway surrounded by tall white stone walls. A metal gate sits maybe three car lengths in front of us, blocking the way.

Rather than stop, Danek accelerates.

“Shit!” shouts Allison.

Tammy drops an F-bomb.

Anthony merely braces himself on the back of Allison’s seat.

The little car smashes down the mercifully flimsy gate, tossing it clattering across a cobblestone courtyard in front of a mini-mansion. As soon as the gate goes flying, Danek slams on the brakes, screeching the tires. Caught in the glare of our headlights, three men in expensive suits freeze stock still at the back end of a black luxury car, the trunk open.

We skid to a stop barely ten feet from their car.
